Mixed Feeling as WAEC Records Best Results in 15 Years; Highest Rate of Malpractice

With 59.22 percent of candidates obtaining five credit passes including English and Mathematics, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) recorded its best results in the last 15 years in this year’s May/June 2017 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Head of National Office of the WAEC, Nigeria, Olu Adenipekun, said in Lagos on Monday while announcing the release of the WASSCE results, the Sun reports.

However examination body also recorded its highest amount of examination malpractice with the results of 214, 952 candidates withheld.

Mr Adenipekun disclosed that 1,471,151 candidates or 94.36 per cent had their results fully processed and released, while 95,734 others have few subjects still being processed due to errors traceable to the candidates.

Adenipekun said of  the number of candidates that sat for the 2017 WASSCE, 1,490,356 candidates, representing 95.59 per cent obtained credits and above in two subjects, 1,436,024 others, representing 92.44 per cent obtained credits and above in three subjects;1,357,193 candidates, (87.05 per cent) obtained credits and above in four subjects, 1,243,772 candidates (79.77 per cent) obtained credits and above in five subjects, while 1,084,214 (69.54 per cent) obtained credits and above in six subjects.

WAEC has recorded consistent decline in students’ results in recent years. In 2015 only 33 percent of students scored six credits and more.
