OOU Lecturers Prepare for Strike
Academic Staff Union of University and National Association of Nigerian Students have condemned the new education funding policy introduced by the Ogun State Government in its tertiary institutions. The unions made their position known in separate statements on Monday.
On its part, the ASUU, Olabisi Onabanjo University branch vowed to paralyse academic activities in the institution if the Ogun State Government stops funding the university.
The lecturers alleged that state government in an interaction with its members along with other unions in the state-owned tertiary institutions on May 18, directed that internal revenue should be generated to pay salaries.
The statement signed by ASUU-OOU Chairman, Dr. Deji Agboola and Secretary, Dr. Temidayo Onojobi, noted that the state government’s directive received total rejection when it was presented at its congress last Monday.
The academic workers affirmed that it was improper for government not to provide adequate funding for its tertiary institutions, saying such policy led to the degeneration of OOU and other institutions in the past.
The statement read in part, "Congress condemned in its entirety the overt and covert directive passed on to tertiary Institutions to generate funds with a view to paying their salaries. Forcing Universities to generate funds to pay salaries would only translate to increasing the already heavy burden on the largely impoverished citizens of the State and the students, who have always been the victims.
