ASUU Calls On FG To Address ASUP Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged the Federal Government to urgently resolve the contending issues that made lecturers of poytechnics and colleges of education embark on strike.

The ASUU President, Dr Nasir Fagge, made the call on Monday in Abuja while briefing newsmen on the state of the nation.

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) have been on strike for 10 months now, while Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) members have been on strike for five months.

Members of the two unions demanded that the Federal Government should remove the dichotomy between HND and degree graduates.

Other demands include the release of the White Paper on the needs assessment of polytechnics, review of the Polytechnic Act by the National Assembly and improvement on condition of service and infrastructure in schools.

Fagge said it was imperative for government to resolve the issues involved in the interest of the Nigerian people and the development of sustainable education.

The ASUU president also urged the Federal Government to evolve a comprehensive strategy in curbing the insurgency in the country.

He noted that ``we have reached a point where ad hoc fire brigade approaches and policies and half measures cannot work, and hence a comprehensive strategy is the answer.

Fagge also called on government and security agencies to intensify efforts toward rescuing the abducted schools girls from Chibok, Borno.
